Olympic Bronze Medal

This Olympic Bronze Medal came up for auction on 25 August 2009 at Dreweatts in Bristol. I'm not sure why anyone would part with a medal, but here it is. Awarded to Albert Gingell in the 1908 London Olympics for in the freestyle wrestling lightweight class.

Here is a link to the auctioneer's website, incorrectly attributing the medal to Samuel Gingell -

"Olympics - A London 1908 bronze medal, awarded to Samuel Gingell (Great Britain), the rim engraved 'Third Prize Light Wrestling (C. AS. C.), with scroll surmounts and suspension loop for wearing; together with a Services Army pocket watch, (2)."

I first registered the domain gingell.com way back in October 1997. The Gingell website had been previously running under a GeoCities account since December 2006.

At the time I didn't see any need to register the other gingell domains. However a few years ago gingell.org and gingell.org.uk came available and I thought I'd better save them before they were registered to some unscrupulous organisation. I don't really use them other than to forward onto the gingell.com domain, so if you fancy one let me know and I'll see what we can do.

Also, if you're interested in a gingell.com email address - you can have yourname@gingell.com - I can set this up for FREE so long as the name you want is still available.

Wilhelmine (Mena) Gangell nee Kannenberg

I received this message earlier this year from Susan Cook in Australia, but somehow misplaced it til now, so I've decided to add it to my blog. I'll let Susan take up the story...

A small band of descendants of Wilhelmine Gangell (nee Kannenberg) gathered approx 350 kilometres north of Adelaide (capital of South Australia) on a cold, windy day on 10 July 2008 to unveil a bronze plaque on her previously unmarked grave to honour her pioneering spirit. Her husband was John Gangell.

My part of this, was to prepare a well sourced and researched document with I have attached. It may be of interest to others. Involvment in this project has included Greg Catchpole, Alison Lawrence, Betty Amber and myself Susan Cook all who are contributers to your website.

I will also attach a couple of photos.

The First is the unveiling by 2 g g g g grandchildren, Tayla and Mitchell

The second, are 5 GG grandchildren, L to R: Neville, Betty, Terry, Susan and Rod

Hanan Gingell American Shoe Store

Bit of a strange one this. I bought it on eBay for the princely sum of 99 pence.

It's a full page advert for a shoe shop called "Hanan Gingell" from a magazine called "The Ladies Field" published in June 1911 for the coronation of King George V.

Their address was 328 to 332 Oxford Street, which today is the address of "The Link" part of the electronics retail giant Dixons.

I've never heard of the "Hanan Gingell" shop before, so please get in touch if you know anything about it.

Antique bible donated to library

Piece of history added to library’s local history collection.

The George family of Evanston donated their antique family bible to the Uinta County Library on Friday.

“This Bible will become the centerpiece of our local history collection,” said Dale Collum, Executive Director of the Uinta County Library, as he accepted its donation from the George family of Evanston.

The antique Bible was purchased in 1876 by David and Caroline Gingell, who became the first couple to be married in Evanston.

I've been sent this site by a couple of people (Barbara Dixon and Allan Gingell to name but a few).

As the site says, "A fully searchable online edition of the largest body of texts detailing the lives of non-elite people ever published, containing accounts of over 100,000 criminal trials held at London's central criminal court."

There are a number of Gingell references, the most notable being Mary Gingell -

MARY GINGELL was indicted for stealing, on the 15th of June 1822, at St. Pancras, in the dwelling-house of John Prouse , two sovereigns, and two 5 l. Bank-notes , his property.

Prisoner's Defence. I never saw the money.

GUILTY - DEATH . Aged 23.

Second Middlesex Jury, before Mr. Justice Best.

I was sent this information by Allan Gingell.

POLICE.

At the MANSION-HOUSE yesterday ARTHUR STRUDWICK, a working lighterman, was summoned for having, on the 6th of May, infringed the 16th by-law of the Thames Conservancy Board by employing one person only on board a barge above 50 tons burden for its navigation and management. The defendant pleaded "Guilty." It was stated that the defendant was in the service of Mr. Gingell, of Red Lion Warf, whose foreman had lately been fined 2o and costs for a precisely similar act. The defendant, replying to the Court, said he know he was breaking the law, but asked what he was to do if his master sent him out alone and refused to employ other men. Sir Robert Carden said after the caution he gave Mr. Gingell and his foreman last week he must impose a heavier penalty - viz., 3o and costs, and if any other cases came before him he should inflict still higher fines. The money was at once paid.

Cadbury was a Runaway Success

I recently received an email from John Gingell and chatted to him on the telephone about his family from Bristol. In last month's Bristol Evening Post was the following story...

Cadbury's Keynsham factory has produced some of the country's top athletes.Its extensive sports facilities and the firm's support for workers on the track or pitch meant employees had the chance to excel at sport.

John Gingell, now 68, who worked at the factory for 40 years, won scores of medals and trophies for athletics.

He won the 800 metres race at the World Peace Games in 1966. He held 50 county titles, 12 midland titles and won 27 England and UK races.

He was in the top three in Europe and in the top 10 in the world at 800 metres indoor races.

Mr Gingell, from Kingswood, said: "In my era, from 1960 to the 1980s, we had four international athletes and another five county athletes.

"Eddie Strong became a world cross country champion, Nick Rose was a national cross country champion and won a commonwealth medal and Ivor Edmonds raced in Berlin for Britain. We were all coached by the production manager at the time Ron Rowles, who used to be a middle distance runner.

"I began training at 15. I used to run to work in the morning and home in the evening and would train two or three times a day. The company used to allow time for training."

Mr Gingell, once the South West's Sports Personality of the Year, said: "Cadbury's has been my life. My national athletics career was due to them. I was just dumbfounded when a neighbour came over and told me they wanted to close the factory. It will be a tragedy if it goes, particularly if the sports facilities are lost."

William Gingell of Bath

I received an email from Alex Gingell in Malta back in December 2006, but somehow managed to mis-file it until now. My apologies to Alex, but here as promised is his email -

Back a couple of years ago you had forwarded to me a contact from Helsinki, Louise Ahonen-Park, who thought that we have same distant ancestors. Well that was true, and from then on we kept in touch to these days.

Sometime after, Louise informed me that her parents, Robert and Elizabeth Park, were to visit Malta for a holiday and asked me if I was ready to have a chat with them over a drink. With pleasure, I responded that I will look after them during their holiday in our splendid island. Together with my wife Joan, I called for them at the airport on their arrival and drove them to the hotel. Robert kindly offered us a drink at the lounge. Robert carried a leather case that appeared heavily loaded. On sitting at table, Robert placed the case on the table, ceremoniously opened it and pronounced that he had a gift for me. The object was wrapped in paper that left little space around in the case. Unfolding the gift, a voluminous old Bible was revealed. Robert disclosed that he had inherited the bible but only kept it due to its antiquity. William Gingell was a nonentity for him, but only recognised the connection when his daughter Louise started delving into the family history.

Turning over the board cover, on the cover-inside Robert pointed to pasted ornamental bookplate. Printed on the bookplate was ‘Wm. Gingell’. Drawing his index finger towards the flyleaf, there was written with a steady hand in black ink ‘Wm Gingell Bath 1767’ possibly William’s own hand-writing. I could not believe it. I wondered if I was in a trance. Joan later told me that never did she ever see my face glowing red as at that particular moment. Robert selflessly uttered “This must belong to you”. Never did I ever dream that I would be in possession of such a family treasure.

The Bible – or more appropriately – The Evangelical Expositor or a Commentary on the Holy Bible – is the work of the Reverend Thomas Haweis (1734 – 1820) and printed in London in 1766. It contains no pictures but it is occasionally embellished with elegant ornamental engravings. I have a feeling that Haweis contracted William Gingell to do the engravings and later presented him with a copy, taking into consideration the closeness of the date of printing and that inscribed in ink. For many years Haweis was chaplain to Lady Huntingdon’s Chapel at Bath, where he died in 1820, a few months after the demise of William and, likewise, was buried in the Abbey.

Robert and Elizabeth are indeed two adorable persons. We spent memorable days taking them to the most interesting places of historical interest and hosted them for dinner at home where we also had our children and their spouses and grandchildren; another time at a restaurant together with my brothers and sisters and their spouses.

I will remain indebted to Robert Park and his family for his most generous gesture of parting from a family heirloom to a distant relative whom he had never met or known before. My gratitude is also directed to Louise who certainly gave her share in her parents’ decision. Honestly, I am not sure if I would have been able to do likewise, but since then I did not find it hard to part with a few original old photos and other artifacts that had somehow found their way to my family but should really have been in possession of the direct descendants.

The Bible, a precious family treasure, is now standing prominently at home on a mahogany book-stand.

Gilbert Gingell

From an edition of the Pontefract & Castleford Express, March 1943 :

An 18 year-old Pontefract youth, Gilbert Gingell, of Halfpenny Lane, Pontefract, who is now in the Royal Navy, has been awarded the British Empire Medal, [Civil Division] for brave conduct in an attempted rescue of the crew of an R.A.F. bomber which crashed and caught fire. He and two other men ran towards it. The flames were spreading, and ammunition was exploding continuously, but they smashed open the machine and brought out one of the occupants. With help, Gingell forced his way further into the burning aircraft and recovered two more bodies; and work continued until the intensity of the flames made further rescue attempts impossible. Unfortunately all the crew died, but the gallantry of the three men has been recognised. One of Gingell’s companions, who is also now a seaman, has received the B.E.M. and the other has been commended for brave conduct. Gingell was burnt on the arms, but was at work the following day. When he was only fifteen he was trapped by a fall of roof at the Prince of Wales Colliery, and his rescuers were surprised to find him alive. One of his legs was broken in three places, and he was unconscious when dragged out. He has volunteered for the submarine service, as he says, he "wants excitement."

Lung disease OAP in parking woe

A CHIPPENHAM man with a lung disease, which makes it difficult for him to walk even short distances, is desperate for a parking spot near his house but says his housing association is refusing to help. Chief Deputy Sheriff J. S. Gingell

Al Gingell sent me this one from a newspaper extract in 1922...

MOXLEY, Alvie A., Sheriff, along with Chief Deputy Sheriff J.S. GINGELL and former Deputy Melvin ETCHINSON of Montgomery County, Maryland, went to the farm of James P. ELKINS at Martinsburg to attach the personal effects of ELKINS and were "routed by ELKINS' wife and two daughters. MOXLEY was knocked down by a blow from one of the women, Deputy GINGELL suffered a black eye and former Deputy ETCHINSON escaped punishment at the hands of the women by beating a hasty retreat to the road."
Headlines read — "Sheriff laid low by woman's fist," "One deputy's eye is blackened and another takes to flight during battle on farm," and "Mother and 2 daughters victors." Armed with attachment papers issued at Rockville, Maryland, the Sheriff and deputies arrived at the farm yesterday morning. When asked by Mrs. ELKINS what their business was and the officers responded by saying they had come to attach the personal property of her husband, Mrs. ELKINS summoned her two daughters from the rear of the house. Sheriff MOXLEY told the women he was only obeying the law and would have to enter the house. "However, the women thought differently. When the officers attempted to gain entrance, a blow to the jaw felled the Sheriff. Deputy GINGELL laughed aloud when the Sheriff 'hit the dirt.' Then he received a stinging right hand to the left eye." Former Deputy ETCHISON reached the roadside safely before he would be attacked by the women.
Meanwhile, the sheriff and deputy were pleading with the women to use a little judgment. "Nothing doing," one replied. "Call the boys from the fields," shouted Mrs. Elkins. That was a signal for MOXLEY and GINGELL to go before the ELKINS' three sons arrived. Running past the dwelling, MOSLEY succeeded in placing the attachment paper on it, satisfying the law. "Jumping into their machine, the sheriff and deputy departed, stopping long enough at the roadside to get ETCHINSON into the machine. GINGELL last night wore a black eye about the courthouse at Rockville, but sheepishly avoided explaining how he got it" — WP 18 Mar 1922.

Warmley Tower Methodist Chapel

Can you help please?

Warmley Tower Methodist Chapel has been closed for services for several years, there is a quite large churchyard and there are almost 30 Gingells buried there.

The Methodist Church is now looking to “sell off” the building, but before doing so would want to “remove” some of the monuments and grave surrounds in order that car parking could be provided at the front of the building, and also would like to “tidy up” the rear graveyard.

I knew that my Great Grandparents were buried there, but I have now found that my Great Great Grandparents are also buried there, along with various other members of the family. (Some of whom I had not yet discovered in my research – so there will be more names to add to the tree)

There are some who are more closely related to others in the tree, and there are some who do not appear in our tree, but following your premise that “all Gingells are related” I guess that they must be part of the family, especially as they all lived in the same area (Oldland Common, Warmley, etc).

Anyway, I know that our relatives are “six feet under” but I am extremely unhappy at the idea of topping them off with tarmac and parking cars on top of them. When you consider that many were only children when they died, it makes my blood boil, and it makes a mockery of the old saying “Rest in Peace”

If you could give this some publicity on the website I would be grateful.
